Method

Botanical Studies and Bird Studies comprise Corinne Jones' Earth Drawings series. Each image begins with an underdrawing of colored pastel chalks (approximately 10-18 layers) to develop a sense of the silhouette/form. Many layers of soil (15 - 30) are then applied until color and surface seem "right". Fixitive is sprayed between each layer to adhere the pigments to the drawing surface and archival glue is used when collaging materials.

Botanical Studies is comprised of plant form silhouettes and/or collaged dried plant material in a field of color. Each approach emphasizes the plant's sculptural characteristics as well. This method of building the image suggests the scientific tradition of botanical images – drawn, painted, printed, or the specimen itself, as well as the tradition of pressed flowers, often used to preserve personal keepsakes. Both are a form of memory. Bird Studies is based on extinct or endangered birds and rely on the bold silhouette of each species.
